Long gone but not forgotten

Fifty years is a long time, but to many people it was only yesterday when the Southport to Preston line was closed. Always impecunious, it was a prime target for the cost-cutting accountants of the Beeching era. However it is still fondly remembered, and in the clubrooms last week Tony Kuivala delivered a fitting eulogy, in the form of a presentation scripted by Ian Shulver describing the history of the line. This included much detail on the building of the line (in several stages) and on the stations, yards and other infrastructure, most of which has long been demolished and built over. One can but wonder what might have happened if the line had survived - Virgin Voyagers from Southport to Blackpool? Pendolinos to Prestwick?
