Quakers to the fore
Sunday 28 June 2015
To many people, Quakers to bring to mind a small community of religious folk who largely keep themselves to themselves, and follow their beliefs in their own quiet way. However this was not always the case, and Ian recently gave a talk showing just how influential Quakers have been in the development of the railways. The inspiration was an exhibition of tapestries depicting Quaker practices and achievements, of which they are many. Apparently they were barred from the 'proper' professions such as medicine and the law, so they turned their talents to industry and banking, thereby helping to underpin much of the infrastructure for the new mode of transport. Their qualities of honesty, integrity and value for money were much appreciated by those they did business with. Would that be the case with (some of) our present-day business leaders….
