Birthdays seem to come thick and fast in our club, thanks to Hilary's careful record-keeping. This time it was Terry's benefit season, with presents of Scottish firewater and of an oversize mug to imbibe it from, not to mention a card and a cake. And when all the jollity had died down, Derek lectured the assembly on narrow-gauge industrial diesels in the north-west. Not for the first time, several members of the audience knew more about the subject than he did, but in a collective act of mercy tempered their remarks, for which he was grateful.
